Nov 16, 2021 The citizens of Perry County formed the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council (LCBD) to educate the public. In 1990, founding members John Winnenberg and Cheryl Blosser took the first steps. The more they researched, the more they found out just how important coal mining was to the area.

The purpose of the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Council is to promote the story of the Little Cities of Black Diamonds Region in southern Perry, northern Athens, and eastern Hocking Counties of Ohio where the impact of the extractive industries of coal, oil, clay and iron ore have significantly impacted our way of life since the late 1800's.

Rich coal mining reserves drove the settlement of our Little Cities of Black Diamonds a name coined by a newspaper writer in the late 1800s to describe Nelsonville, one of the 70 or so coal mining boomtowns that sprung to life in our region and thrived until their decline in the first half of the 1900s.
