Overview. Internet freedom in Indonesia declined during the coverage period, due to a new regulation that imposes takedown and registration requirements on a broad range of technology companies. Internet access in Papua was again disrupted, with some disruptions coinciding with events related to Papuan independence.
Key Global Findings. Declines outnumber gains for the ninth consecutive year. Since June 2018, 33 of the 65 countries assessed in Freedom on the Net experienced a deterioration in internet freedom. The biggest score declines took place in Sudan and Kazakhstan, followed by Brazil, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.
Key Developments in 2019. President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) was reelected in April, defeating former general Prabowo Subianto in a rematch of their 2014 contest. Prabowos supporters held a major protest in Jakarta in May to object to Jokowis reelection.
