How Science Can Support The Sustainable Cocoa Initiative

Nov 25, 2022 On the 13 th October 2022, The European Commission Joint Research Centre organised an online side event at the FAO Science and Innovation Forum. The objective of the meeting was to discuss the role of science and research in enhancing the sustainability of the cocoa value chain.

The objectives of the Sustainable Cocoa Initiative are to: ensure a decent living income for cocoa farmers. advance the elimination of child labour and trafficking in cocoa supply chains. strengthen forest protection and restoration in cocoa-producing regions.

Apr 4, 2024 The EU Sustainable Cocoa Initiative is based on the conviction that prices and sustainability are the two sides of the same coin. - To support the initiative, the European Union will contribute 25 million to enhance the economic, social and environmental sustainability of cocoa production in Cte d'Ivoire, Ghana and Cameroon.

Objectives of the sustainable cocoa initiative: 1) advance the elimination of child labour and traficking in cocoa supply chains, 2) strengthen forest protection and restoration in cocoa-producing regions, and. 3) ensure a decent living income for cocoa farmers.

The Sustainable Cocoa Initiative is supported by a far-reaching EUR 25 million programme EU support to sustainable cocoa that started in 2022 in Cte dIvoire, Ghana and Cameroon. The programme enhances the structural reform of the sector in line with the discussions and results of the multi-stakeholder dialogue.
