Aug 4, 2018 The Mullard 12AX7 long plate square getter is the best I ever heard. Seller stated Telefunken 803s are not as good at $1K+ each. A tube I thought is better than the 3rd place Mullard 12AX7 round plate are the Raytheon 5751 windmill getter. All are black plates.

Jan 21, 2013 Black Plate triple Mica -military 5751 - same review as the non-military version however, this is a supreme quiet tube. In a console amp (Motorola, Maggie, etc. ) brings out the best of the best. Haven't found a need for the Mullard or Tele's in the consoles so these are the ones. RCA Grey plates Black Plates 5751WA

I will also get into tube dampers, and how these dampers can greatly improve tube sound and performance in guitar and audio applications.

By my count we have the Sovtek 5751, Sovtek 12AX7 LPS, Mullard and now the Gold Lion brand. A quick glance and you might think they were all the same but careful inspection reveals physical differences in construction and plate coatings.

May 10, 2016 RCA 5751 are good, the better have 3 mica. You might try Sovtek 12AX7LPS or NOS Sovtek 12AX7WA i only have try the last , good clean sound, In vintage i think i prefer 12AX7 RCA long black plates to almost everything, in this moment. Matsushita and Mullard are tubes to try too.

Mar 3, 2005 The current reigning "12AX7" Champion in my tube amplifier is the Sylvania Blackplates gold labeled triple mica type 5751. A 5751 tube is compatible in a 12AX7 spot, it just has slightly lower gain for reduced noise and microphonics. Despite the nominal lower gain it is the single most powerful and dynamic "12AX7" I have ever heard.

Jul 16, 2002 Mullard CV4004 (83-85). VERY nicely balanced and extended, similar to GE 5751 with great body. Less air than the best 5751, but better balanced than Tungsram or Raytheon 12AX7. Great in Alpha DAC, better than rest in my circuit, until I tired the Tungsram 12AX7. Amperex 12AX7 is also quite good--like the TS, but missing some clarity. Lively tube.

A lower gain factor might lead to the loss of some notes, but it will reduce microphonics and distortion. The choice is yours, and you can always mix and match tubes to achieve the most appropriate setup.

The one 'regular' type 12AX7 I really love (it kick's ass with rock music -- and it's still cheap) is the RCA 17mm long blackplate! Wow! I have two old Dynaco branded Telefunken black smooth plate 12ax7s, two old Dystrom branded Mullard Blackburn 12ax7s, and two old CBS Hytron black plate 12au7s. Sounds great. One JAN Sylvania 5751 dated 7326 in a box dated 10/81 so probably used but looks new. 1200/1150 $25.

The Sovtek 5751 is a special version with 70% of the gain of a normal 12AX7. This tube has low microphonics and is useful for lowering the gain of an amplifier to provide a clean, bell-like tone that is reminiscent of Stevie Ray Vaughans "Riviera Paradise".

Which is kind of odd, in a tube nerd kind of way, because Ei was owned by Phillips who owned many brands like Mullard, Amperex, Siemens, Valvo, etc. but not Telefunken.
