May 24, 2017 New Straitsville, OH was considered the Bootleg Capital of Ohio during the Depression. Its population of enterprising ex-coalminers concealed dozens of illegal moonshine stills in the areas hollows and abandoned mineshafts, selling it to a nation desperate for a stiff drink.
New Straitsville resident Christopher Evans, a well-known union organizer, used Robinsons Cave to lead miners throughout the long Hocking Valley Coal Strike of 1884-1885. The cave was also where non-union miners met to plan to set the Columbus & Hocking Coal & Iron Company mines on fire in a desperate attempt to end the Hocking Valley Strike.
The New Straitsville History Museum is the towns resource for researching and interpreting local history. The museum houses the New Straitsville History Group who volunteer to maintain the museum and give tours of the town, the local Methodist Church, and Robinsons cave.
